Henri Châtin Hofmann

Very little is known about the third husband of the dancer Anita Berber, outside of his relationship with her.

The American dancer came to Berlin in December 1923 and debuted his first dance programme six months later at the Munich Schauspielhaus. In August 1924, he performed the same production at Berlin’s Blüthner-Saal where Anita Berber was in the audience – two weeks later they were married.

They first performed together in the Rudolf Nelson revue Confetti in October of that year and then at the premiere of the film Dante’s Inferno.

Their four years together were marked by both artistic excellence and by scandal and excess, culminating in Anita’s death in November 1928. Henri returned to New York City in 1930, where he continued to perform his and Anita’s work. It is believed he spent many years as a psychiatric patient in Baltimore’s State Hospital, where he died in 1961.
